What Defines Us?

Jeremy Bentham, The greatest happiness for the greatest number.

I am slightly deviating from the subject of this blog. This post is essentially non-legal in character. It is concerned with my thoughts in general. I feel that a person is made up of his thoughts, his deeds, his reflections and other such so called non-material characters. Basically, character is what that defines us. By character, I do not mean good or bad, true or false or other such things. We are what we think we are. Our decisions or our actions might not be agreeable to everyone, even to those who care about us. But, that is what defines us. We must do what we feel like to do. Our actions will inevitably lead to consequences and we are alone responsible for those consequences, none else. We might suffer or flourish because of such actions. But, irrespective of this fact, we must do what we feel like to do. That and that alone is the true pursuit of happiness.

Many of us have habit of calling someone a best friend or a good friend or other such comparative terms. I personally feel that a friend is a friend. There is no good or best friend for me. The day I call someone as my best friend or a good friend will be a very unfortunate day in my life. I do not have the luxury of having a lot of friends. I have very few friends and I cherish the bond of friendship with them.

Words are deceptive. We might fall in their trap. Calling someone a friend does not mean that others are enemies or others are simply irrelevant. Friend is again just a relative term. It is simply meant to express the level of bonding or association with a person.

Language is unreliable. It is not possible to express everything in words or a particular language or a particular gesture. It is the feeling and the intent that matters.
